About

AOI logo new.jpg

I trained in Graphic Arts and Design at Leeds Metropolitan University (BA Hons), and Cross-Sectoral and Community Arts at Goldsmiths University (Post-Graduate Diploma). I’ve studied Technical Theatre at the City Lit, and Art Therapy at Warwickshire College, and I have spent much of my career supporting others in their own creativity.

I painted my first mural in the 1980’s, and mural painting led me into both theatre design work and community arts work, which in turn led to a range of roles in the voluntary and community sectors. Not all these roles have been arts-based, but whether supporting people who have learning disabilities, managing volunteers, or co-ordinating projects, I’ve always promoted creative opportunities as much as possible.

My first love is drawing, and I’m a huge fan of graphic novels and BD’s (bandes dessinees - French and Belgian graphic novels). I’ve spoken about my illustration work at the Comics Forum of The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities at Oxford University, and at the Laydeez Do Comics forum in London and Birmingham. In 2023 I spoke at the London Cartoon Museum, also for Laydeez Do Comics.

My work won an award at the National Learning Disabilities and Autism Awards: the Covid resources that I illustrated for Books Beyond Words, 'Love in Lockdown', 'Having a Test for Coronavirus' and 'Beating the Virus', won the 2021 Breaking Down Barriers team category award, celebrating work which promotes accessible communication.

I am a member of the Association of Illustrators.
